AmeriCorps AmeriCorps
Main Office:Snyder Memorial Room 161
Phone:(419) 530-4347
Director: Eileen Burch
Web Page:None Available.
About AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a a network of state and national service projects which are dedicated to the goals of getting things done to meet the educational, human, environmental and public safety needs of communities. Citizens of all ages and backgrounds volunteer their services to bring life to the AmeriCorps ethic of community service and responsibility which includes:
  1. improving communities;
  2. encouraging Member responsibility toward their communities, families and themselves; and
  3. expanding and enhancing the life skills of Corps Members through education and job experiences.
While there is no typical AmeriCorps Member, each individual elected must demonstrate a commitment to service, a willingness to use his/her time and abilities to improve the lives of others, and an interest in learning new skills.

To address the national and local needs of the nation's system of schooling the Council of the Great City Schools and Recruiting New Teachers established the Urban Education Service Corps (UESC) and united the project with AmenCorps for the purpose of improving the academic achievement of urban students. UESC consists of five urban school districts and their local teacher preparation institutions. These sites include: Denver, CO, Long Beach, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Omaha, NE and Toledo, 011. Funding for each site's project is provided through a grant supported by the Corporation for National Service.

UESC-Toledo operates in three Toledo Public Schools: King, Pickett, and Spring. Each school employes a team of 4-5 Lead Teachers who supervise the site. Through an after school tutoring program Corps Members offer reading and math support to fourth grade students. Corps Members also serve as role models and mentors as they participate with the program students in planned developmental activities.

Corps Members are chosen from UT college students and TPS high school students who express an interest in volunteerism and successfully meet all of the application criteria. Members are expected to participate in all training/orientation sessions prior to their work in the schools and all other training sessions scheduled throughout the academic year and summer institute. Training will include: CPR/First Aid, Conflict Resolution and effective reading and math strategies. All prospective Members must make a 12 month commitment to the UESC-T project which will begin September, 1997 and conclude with the accumulation of a minimun of 900 hours of service (including training time). Each Member will work approximately 10-15 hours per week either during the school day or in after-school tutoring sessions.

Benefits to each Corps Member are numerous and specific to each program and site. UESC-T Corps Members who successfully fulfill the terms of the AmenCorps agreement will be offered an educational award by the Corporation of National Service in the amount of $2,363. Students enrolled in the teacher preparation program at The University of Toledo may receive course credit toward their academic program while gaining experience in working with diverse populations in urban settings. Moreover, students who are interested in becoming teachers in Toledo Public Schools will be offered a pre-employment teaching contract which offers employment opportunities to those who successfully complete all requirements for licensure in the State of Ohio.

The developers of the Urban Education Service Corps envision the service experience in urban classrooms as an essential component to a quality teacher preparation program. Their philosophical views embrace service as a mechanism to extend educational and career opportunities to diverse and non-traditional populations while bringing to the urban schools the idealism, humanitarianism and determination of the service corps participant.
