Kerman
Gonbad-e-Jabaliyeh monument
One of the oldest cities in IRAN believed to be founded by Ardeshir I, founder of Sassanian dynasty, in the early 3rd century.  It was from the 7th century ruled in turn by the Arabs, by  Buyids, the Seljuks, the Tourkmans and the Mongols.  But it did not become famous for its carpets until long after Marco Polo (who mentioned  Kerman in his itinerary for its silk and leather).

Kerman is also famous for its pistachio nuts, the most exported nuts from IRAN.  The beautiful gardens of pistachio is one of the most unique places tourists visit.
